About Philip Bruce

My Qualifications

Welcome – You’re in the Right Place

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or haunted by things that happened in your past, you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with have spent years coping in silence, appearing high-functioning on the outside while struggling internally. Whether you’re dealing with childhood trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties, or emotional overwhelm, therapy can help you move forward.

A Calm and Reassuring Presence

Clients often tell me that my calm, grounded manner helps them feel at ease from the very first session. I believe that safety in the therapeutic relationship is essential—especially when working with trauma. Whether you’re seeking EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), or Schema Therapy, I provide a warm, non-judgemental space where you can begin to understand yourself with compassion.

Experience You Can Trust

With a strong foundation in psychology and over a decade of experience in the NHS, I’ve worked in a wide range of services including:

  • Adult mental health

  • Veterans support

  • Child and adolescent services

  • Learning disabilities

  • Personality disorders and complex trauma

This has given me the skills to connect with a diverse range of clients—supporting you wherever you are in your journey.

A Unique Journey into Psychotherapy

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I worked as a lorry driver. It was during those long hours on the road that I realised I wanted something more meaningful. I began studying psychology while working full time and later completed a degree at the University of Derby, followed by a Master’s in Health Psychology.

I went on to train in CBT at the University of Reading, working in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) before moving into secondary care. Over time, my passion grew for therapies that went deeper than talking—methods that could help people truly shift how they relate to their past. That led me to specialise in EMDR therapy and IFS-informed approaches to trauma.

My Approach to Therapy

I don’t believe in asking “what’s wrong with you?” Instead, I ask, “what happened to you?” Your symptoms make sense. Together, we’ll explore how your experiences have shaped your beliefs and responses. Using EMDR therapy, IFS, and Schema Therapy, we’ll work at a pace that feels safe, helping you heal from the inside out.

Whether you are seeking online EMDR therapy in the UK, in-person sessions in the South West, or a trauma-informed approach that integrates different evidence-based methods, I am here to support you.

Moving Forward

Healing is possible—even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. As a trained and experienced EMDR therapist specialising in childhood trauma, complex PTSD, and emotional dysregulation, I will support you to move beyond the past so it stops intruding on your present.

This spring, I’ll be completing Level 1 training in Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) with IFS UK. Once qualified, I’ll be a registered IFS therapist—further deepening the support I can offer you.

Ready to Begin?

If you’re ready to start therapy or have questions about how EMDR or IFS could help you, I invite you to get in touch. Whether you’re based in Bath, Bristol, or anywhere in the UK, I offer both in-person and online therapy for trauma.

How Therapy Can Help You

Life can sometimes feel more challenging than it needs to be. You might be experiencing anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, or finding yourself stuck in patterns that don’t make sense. Relationships can feel difficult—maybe you unintentionally push people away, or find yourself trying to please others to keep the peace. You might feel on edge, disconnected, or emotionally charged in certain situations, but you’re unsure why.

You may have gone through difficult experiences—whether it’s a challenging childhood, a tough breakup, a stressful job, or a situation that left you feeling powerless. You might not label it as “trauma,” but something just feels off.

These feelings can show up in your everyday life as:

✔️ Overthinking and self-doubt, questioning your actions and words

✔️ Struggling to relax or feel at ease, even when there’s no obvious reason for tension

✔️ Pushing through exhaustion or burnout, finding it hard to slow down

✔️ Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected, as if you’re observing life rather than living it

✔️ Avoiding conflict at all costs, or having trouble saying “no”

✔️ Being overly self-critical, feeling like nothing you do is ever enough

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. These reactions are often your mind and body adjusting to past experiences—they don’t mean something is wrong with you.

Therapy can help you understand where these feelings come from, untangle them, and shift the patterns that keep you feeling stuck. It’s not about reliving the past, but understanding it in a way that helps you feel lighter, calmer, and more in control.

With approaches like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Schema Therapy, therapy offers a safe space to explore what’s beneath the surface, regulate emotions, and build self-trust and confidence.

If you’re ready to stop feeling like life is harder than it should be, therapy can help you find a path forward.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is an integrative approach designed to help individuals understand and change deeply rooted patterns thinking, feeling, and behaving, known as schemas. Developed by Jeffrey Young, it combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, attachment theory, and emotion-focused therapy.

This therapeutic method is particularly effective for those with chronic issues, as it addresses the underlying emotional and cognitive issues that contribute to their struggles. By exploring and reshaping these schemas, clients can develop healthier coping strategies and improve their relationships.

I offer Schema Therapy online and also face to face in Corsham, Wiltshire.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a powerful approach to help clients address trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. I can provide individual EMDR therapy sessions tailored to each client’s unique needs. I also use attachment-informed EMDR which can help change current problems using an attachment focused framework.

I offer EMDR Therapy face to face in Corsham, Wiltshire and online.

Internal Family Systems Therapy

Internal Family Systems therapy focuses on understanding and healing the different parts of the self. I can guide you through this transformative process, fostering self-awareness and emotional healing. A key part of this therapy is the belief that there are No Bad Parts and that all parts are welcome, even if they are causing issues in our daily life.

I can offer IFS Therapy face to face in Corsham, Wiltshire and online.
